Practice in Context Notes (2/10/2012):

  • Mise en Scene – the visual themes or story within the scene (what it shows).
  • Finish the evaluation of the image for next week.
  • Summary of the Text I have read and the opinions of others:
The Game Design Reader: A Rules of Play Anthology. Huizinga, J. Nature & Significance of Play as a Cultural Phenomenon, (2006) MIT Press London.
o   Play is play until it is broken by violence.
o   Play is appreciated by both humans and animals and has existed since the beginning of time.
o   Play can be anything from video games to chess. And while chess is perhaps more serious it is still interpreted as a form of fun.
o   Fun can come from both play and surprise.
  • I personally believe that play is part of Nature vs. Nurture as a child brought up in a calm environment with loving parents my play domestic games e.g. tea parties. Whereas a child in a war torn country with soldiers everywhere may play war games.
  • Animals can be seen playing and this is often rehearsing what they will do as mature animals e.g. hunting. Human animals also play in this way when they mimic adult behaviour. So play can be seen as a serious preparation for life.
  • Play can also be hard work and play and work can be the same thing e.g. playing at school often leads to learning new skills and also social skills.
  • Try and read the extract given again if I can.
  • Fun is particularly chemical as well (endorphins).
  • Games can also provide escapism from real life.
Reminders to myself -
o   Replace my notebook for a new one.
o   Allowed to write down notes on the extract we were given.
o   Refer to my ‘Theory of Fun’ book to help me understand the concept of play.
o   Put my work up on Blogger so as my lecturer can read it.
o   Read my Persona 4 art book to help me write about my context image.
